Ocular Migraine - The Headache Without The Ache

On the subject of the Ocular Migraine we take a big of a different turn when discussing migraine headaches. Most of us know what a headache is because, inevitably we all will get one sooner or later in our lifetimes. Unfortunately some of us are a bit more unfortunate and have to suffer with migraine headaches as well. Usually we can tell when we have a headache coming on. For me it begins with some pain on the right side of my neck that eventually moves into my skull on the right side and, if it's a really bad headache it won't be long until my whole head feels like it's about to explode. When they get like this it's usually time to pull out the headache powders and lay down until the pain subsides.

A Migraine Of The Silent Type

Sit back and imagine with it if you will your feeling the onslaught of a Migraine coming on. You prepare yourself by making sure your headache powders are ready just in case it's one of the "big ones". The sharp pains start to occur and this is accompanied by flashes of light with a strobe effect. You've had this happen many times before, your familiar with what is going on and you are pretty sure what is going to happen next. The pain is about to set in however, something strange happens it never comes. Instead the flashing grows more intense. and your field of vision starts to become distorted with small black dots as if your peering through little peep holes into the void. This effect grows and the flashing intensifies and all of a sudden you feel as if your looking into a TV set with a flashing border around it like the picture below. Your fingers become numb and your eyes are fatigued yet, the sharp migraine pains that you normally experience aren't present. Why is this? It could be, your experiencing what is known as the silent migraine, a Ocular Migraine.

What's The Cause? How Is It Treated?

How Do I know I have a Ocular Migraine? This is where the story on Ocular Migraines takes an interesting twist. Truth be known, it seems that what exactly causes the Ocular Migraine is for the most part unknown. Also while some physicians proscribe treatments for the most part Ocular Migraines go untreated except for some painkiller prescriptions and such. On to of it all it seems that doctors can't really come together on the exact cause or be able to agree on a list of standard symptoms. The downside to this is many times a person who is experiencing a Ocular Migraine it's symptoms are often attributed to some other problem and the patient is misdiagnosed. Since there is no headache pain present it makes it very difficult for doctors to zero in on what is actually happening. In some extreme cases patients have been thought to of been having a stroke when indeed it was a Ocular Migraine that was present.

Ok, I know I'm having Ocular Migraines, What can I do?

OK, I know I'm having Ocular Migraines, What can I do? How

First thing I would suggest would to get a proper diagnosis from your doctor. Also don't be afraid to use alternative methods to provide you relief. Everyone is different and thus all our needs and what will work for us will always be different. I would use the Internet as a tool so you can learn more about Ocular Migraine. If you are having physical pain in addition to Ocular Migraines it would be to your advantage to take care of that problem as well. You could also be having simple tension headaches that could be aggravating your Ocular Migraines. I recommend checking out Paul Bacho's "Tension Headache Relief Program" it's very well done and he will give you the first 3 chapters of the program FREE for just signing up.

Also a very good book on the subject of the Ocular Migraine is
Migraine Auras: When the Visual World Fails by Richard Grossinger for further reading on the subject!
